I have done an All Pro Home Inspection on a newer home – less than a year old.
The client could not understand why there were lots of stress cracks starting to happen all over the interiors. Doors ran out of true and plumb were becoming hard to operate, the floors sloped and also the hardwood floors started to reveal large gaps on areas.
Right after a geologist eliminated any soil issues I went into the crawl space to check things out.
It didn’t take very long to uncover numerous framing oddities. There were shims added to the sill plate to compensate for an uneven footing in areas, there were 2 sill plates added in at areas of the foundation instead of one, horizontal supports didn’t fall into line correctly, huge gaps were observed in between the top part of the concrete and sill plate.
All of this odd work contributed to the fact that someone was trying to compensate for a big fault on the foundation.
Right after carrying out further investigation I found that the foundation had actually been added 5 inches away from level from a single end to another. The attempted corrections were not enough since the house was undergoing much more than normal settlement.
