I did an All Pro Home Inspection on the newer house – lower than one year old.
The customer could not understand why there were lots of stress cracks beginning to take place throughout the interiors. Doors ran out of true and plumb were turning into difficult to run, the floors sloped and the hardwood flooring started to reveal big gaps in areas.
After a geologist ruled out any soil problems I went into the crawl space to evaluate things out.
It didn’t take long to uncover many framing oddities. There were shims included with the sill plate to make up for an bumpy ground in areas, there initially were 2 sill plates added at parts of the foundation rather than one, horizontal beams did not line up correctly, large gaps were observed in between the top of the concrete and sill plate.
All of this odd work added up to the fact that somebody was trying to compensate for a major fault on the foundation.
After doing further investigation I found that the foundation had been added five inches away from level from a single end to the other. The tried corrections were not enough since the home was going through more than usual settlement.
