I did an All Pro Home Inspection on the newer house – lower than one year old.
The customer couldn’t comprehend why there have been many stress cracks starting to occur throughout the interiors. Doors ran out of true and plumb were becoming difficult to operate, the floors sloped and the hardwood flooring began to reveal large gaps on areas.
After having a geologist ruled out any soil problems I went into the crawl space to evaluate things out.
It didn’t take very long to find out many framing oddities. There were clearly shims added to the sill plate to compensate for an uneven ground on areas, there initially were two sill plates added at areas of the foundation rather than one, horizontal beams didn’t line up properly, large spaces were noted between the top of the concrete and sill plate.
All of this funky work added up to the fact that somebody was attempting to make amends for a big mistake in the foundation.
Just after doing more investigation I found that the foundation had actually been added 5 inches away from level from one end to another. The attempted corrections were insufficient because the house was undergoing more than usual settlement.
