I did an All Pro Home Inspection on a newer home – lower than a year old.
The customer could not understand why there were lots of stress cracks beginning to happen all over the interiors. Doors ran out of true and plumb were turning into difficult to run, the floors steep and the hardwood floors started to reveal big spaces in areas.
After a geologist eliminated any soil issues I went into the crawl space to evaluate things out.
It didn’t take very long to uncover numerous framing oddities. There were shims added to the sill plate to compensate for an uneven footing in areas, there initially were 2 sill plates added in at areas of the foundation rather than one, horizontal beams did not line up properly, huge gaps were noted in between the top of the concrete and sill plate.
All of this odd job added up to the fact that someone was trying to make amends for a big mistake in the foundation.
Just after doing further investigation I found that this foundation had been added 5 inches away from level from a single end to the other. The attempted corrections were insufficient since the home was undergoing much more than normal settlement.
